I will respond to select articles or statements that I hear about.
I also must admit that when she said that I blasted the media coverage of the tragedy, I was somewhat convicted. I must apologize to the media at large for coming across so harsh, unfortunately, for incidents that I cited that is the way that I felt. There have been some well done articles covering the tragedy like the article on Bethe in the Spotlight Section of the Rocky Mountain News (sorry, I don't remember the date). The best coverage that I have seen on the trial was in the July 8, 1998 edition of the Community Courier. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on your point of view), I did not nor did I want to hear or read about all the coverage of this tragedy. Unfortunately, it is all too real to me. Thank you Mrs. McCarroll.
The statement about "wanting to put the kids in a vehicle and drive in a lake" - congradulations - everyone that knows anything about Bethe knows that the statement was taken completely out of context. However, I'll now explain. I knew that my wife was sick and did my best to get her out of the house. On this particular occusion, I was trying to get her to talk so I was asking her all sorts of questions. I asked her to describe her wildest fantasy. During this entire conversation, I was trying to draw her out and say anything (normally I'm the one that she has to draw out). The amount of effort that it took for her to actually complete a thought emphasized how ill she really was to me and that she needed help. Her eventual response that she would like to strap the kids in the car and drive in a lake only farther emphasized how ill she was. The media itself should take the blame for the whole statement because of it's publicity of the Susan Miller(?) case. That was not a statement that Bethe could have ever come up with on her own. Even knowing that statement, I could not imagine Bethe ever hurting our children (for that matter any child) after all this is the same woman who could only hug Benjamin and could not even say that's enough when Ben would ask her to read another book at bedtime. And just for the record, I was the one that made both of Bethe's last two Psychitrists appointments and was doing my best to make sure that she went to them because I took this illness very seriously - I did my best. Now, you don't have to wonder why I really don't want to deal with the media. |
